UPDATE (4/11/2024): The event has been cancelled due to a forecast of rain and will be rescheduled for later in the year. Refunds will be issued to all registrants. We regret the inconvenience and hope that you will be able to join us next time!

Andrew Alden, author of the Chronicle bestseller Deep Oakland: How Geology Shaped a City, will show us the ice-age landscape that surrounds Lake Merritt, Oakland's unique centerpiece. As we circle the lake on this 5 km/3.6 mile walk, we'll learn about the larger tectonic setting that accounts for its distinctive presence and touch upon the ways it has affected Oakland's development, from prehistory to today. This will be Lake Merritt as you've never seen it!

We'll meet at the corner of Bellevue Ave. and Grand Ave. Oakland, on the colorful stairs leading to Children's Fairyland. Parking is available inside Lakeside Park, or arrive via the 12 or NL bus lines. The meeting site is also within a flat, 0.6 mile walk from the 19th St. BART station.
