NCSWA members are invited to tour Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to discover how this partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of California brings science solutions to the world, this tour is for you!

Lunch conversation on AI and machine learning: The visit will start with a brief talk and Q&A over a lab-provided lunch with Michael Mahoney about the path forward for developing AI to advance scientific discovery. Mahoney, who leads the Machine Learning and Analytics Group in Berkeley Lab's Scientific Data Division, is an expert on accelerating scientific discovery using AI and machine learning. (Details on ordering lunch will be provided on a date closer to the event.)

Tour our world-class research facilities: After lunch, you’ll visit three of the lab's five National User Facilities, which together provide nearly 14,000 researchers per year with advanced capabilities in high-performance computing and data science, chemical sciences, materials synthesis, and genomic science. The tour includes stops at these facilities:

Advanced Light Source: a specialized particle accelerator, known as a synchrotron light source, that generates bright beams of X-ray, infrared, and extreme ultraviolet light useful for research. It supports the research of 2,000 users annually.

Molecular Foundry: a nanoscience research facility that provides scientists from around the world access to world-class expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

NERSC: As the primary scientific computing facility for the DOE Office of Science, NERSC provides computational resources and expertise to more than 8,000 scientists each year, who use it to perform unclassified basic research.

Attendees will need to fill out an additional Google form to provide LBNL with dietary preferences and visitor badge information. A link to the form will be included in your registration email. Please look for and submit the form as it is required to complete your registration.

Transportation will be provided to and from Berkeley Lab from a central location in Berkeley. Details will be made available to registrants at a later date.
