Summer is the perfect time for a kayak trip. And Big Break Regional Shoreline, where the tides of the Pacific meet California's two largest rivers, is an ideal spot to paddle. The mix of salt and fresh water draws an impressive range of wildlife to this wetland at the edge of the San Joaquin River.

Here, stands of tule and willow shelter a birder's paradise. Great blue herons, egrets, hawks, coots, and even white-faced ibis are often seen from the water. Nesting birds include black rails, northern harriers, white-tailed kites, and yellow-breasted chats. Beaver, muskrat, and river otter all breed in the area as well.

Tour this classic Delta wetland by kayak with NCSWA on June 15. We'll start the visit on land with an overview of the California Delta with Supervising Naturalist Mike Moran. The recreation staff will then go over the day’s paddling plan, water safety, and gear before we hit the water.

We will be paddling around the hidden corners of Big Break Regional Shoreline and the California Delta. Our exact route will depend on conditions on the water.

Big Break Regional Shoreline, 69 Big Break Road, Oakley. Gather at the Visitor Center.

The tour begins at 8:30 a.m. because temperatures in the area tend to get very toasty in summer. The kayak trip will conclude by noon.

Kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices (life vests), and all associated safety equipment will be provided.
